Today, we want to share an important update regarding device management and how we’re making it easier than ever to keep your network running smoothly.
The “Ghost Device” Problem
If you’ve checked your device count recently, you might have noticed it looks unusually high. Don’t worry—you probably don’t have dozens of mystery laptops hiding in the office! Modern devices frequently use “randomized MAC addresses” to protect your privacy when connecting to public networks.
While this is great for device privacy in public WiFi environments, it is not helpful in your trusted and secured network environments. Random MAC addresses create “ghost devices” on your network. Every time a phone or tablet rotates its address, our system registers it as a brand-new connection and treats it as a “stranger” unless you assign it to a policy. Over time, this artificially inflates your active device count and clutters your management dashboard.
The Solution: The Device Cleanup Tool

Available directly on your dashboard, this feature allows you to easily identify and clear out these inactive ghost devices. With our new tools in place empowering you to easily manage your device inventory, we are excited to roll out real-time device license management over the next few weeks. Instead of guessing how many active connections you currently are using from your device license on your network, this usage enforcement gives you immediate, transparent insight into your exact usage.
Dynamic management ensures your active connections accurately reflect your real-world usage, naturally keeping network clutter to a minimum, and allowing you to do proper resource planning for networks that would require different license tiers as you scale into the future.
